What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese name consisting of 2 words Rei and Ki meaning spiritually guided life energy (commonly known as Universal Life Energy), an energy which animates us all and is found all around us.

How does one learn Reiki?
Anyone can "learn" Reiki. The word learn is not quite right as most of us cannot just read about Reiki and then do it. The ability to use Reiki is normally given via an attunement or initiation. When attending a Reiki course the participant gets attuned/initiated by a Reiki master through a simple process, this opens him/her to receive and utilize more of the Universal Life Energy. The attunements have in themselves a very powerful balancing and healing effect. Since energy spins at different levels Reiki is normally split into 3 levels: Reiki 1, Reiki 2 and Master level. Once attuned Reiki is easy to use and your ability to use Reiki will never leave you!

Is Reiki a religion or any other belief system?
No Reiki is not a religion and you do not have to believe in anything special. Reiki is suitable whatever faith or beleifs you have. The only thing you need to have is a sincere wish to help yourself (or others). Most healing systems are based on intent and so is Reiki.

What is the difference between healing and curing?
If you look up the two words in a dictionary you will probably find that they mean more or less the same. In real life we seem to have given the two words slightly different interpretations. Healing is when you go to the root of the problem and restore the body's balance. Curing is what is normally considered done when you actually remove the problem (but maybe not the cause). When you have surgery you can remove the "sick" organ or tissue but this might not solve the problem as the procedure often does not solve the underlying problem. One can also be healed but not cured, i.e. your body is in balance but you still have a medical problem.

Can Reiki heal me?
No promises can be made about the outcome of the use of Reiki (or any other healing system). It all depends on you, your intent, your background and the nature of your problem. Healing is a different experience and has different effects on every individual. A big step towards healing yourself is to actually realize your need for healing.
Here are some important questions to think about, reflect and answer them truthfully:
- Do you want to become whole or do you simply want to have your problem go away?
- Are you willing to make changes in your life that are necessary for your healing process?
- Do you recognize any patterns in your life that block the flow of energy in your body?
- Have you taken a serious look at your habits and patterns?
- What are your eating habits?
- Do you drink enough water?
- If you are physically capable of doing so, do you exercise, even if it is no more than a walk around the block?
- Do you blame others for your illness?
- Are you holding old grudges?
- Have you had this illness for a long time? Does it define who you are? Who would you be without it? Do you want to be without it?
- OK now you have taken a first step, the next step could be to receive Reiki or even better do a Reiki course so you can help yourself.

Can Reiki be used on any illness?
Yes, Reiki can be used on any illness but this does not mean everyone will be healed using Reiki. Reiki will help restore the balance in the body and can relieve or even remove symptoms. Reiki has successfully been used on conditions such as reducing stress, relieving pain, headaches, stomach upsets, back problems, asthma - respiratory problems, PMT, menstrual problems, sinus, anxiety and many many more. Remember that you as an individual have to have the firm intention of getting well before any real healing can take place. (Please observe that Reiki should never be used instead of medical treatment, it should be used as a compliment and a way to become and remain healthy.)

What does a Reiki treatment consist of?
You relax, fully dressed, on a couch or seated while the healer holds his hands on or above you. A treatment can last an hour or longer depending on the treatment required. In the western world many practitioners use the standard hand positions and commonly a full treatment is given covering all the important organs of the body. There is no pressure on the body making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions, sometimes hands are even held away from the body.

What will I feel or experience during a treatment?
Once again I will have to say that it differs from person to person and possibly also between different sessions.
The energy flows wherever it is required (spiritually guided) and can normally be felt as a warm sensation or tingling in the body. Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing and soothing experience!
Usually when receiving Reiki you will feel very relaxed and you may have a "floating" feeling. You may feel heat, a tingling or cold under the practitioners hands. These and other feelings come from what the Reiki energy is actually doing in and around your body i.e. adding energy, removing excess energy, balancing, removing blockages etc. It is also possible that you experience different emotions or thoughts you had forgotten might pop up. If they do you are probably supposed to learn something and release them. Some people receive insights on how to solve problems.
Remember that all healing starts a process of release, this could be emotions or even toxins in your body that you need to get rid of. You might initially even feel worse than before but this is soon passing. You can help your body by drinking lots of water.

How many treatments should I have?
There is not really a set number. Every person and his/her problem is different. Some people only require one or two sessions while others need several. If you are just interested in seeing what Reiki can do for you then just take one or two sessions. If you have a chronic problem you want to work with then make a plan. Suggestion: Start with one session per day for 4 days and then follow up with one session per week.
Remember that a Reiki initiation in itself is a powerful healer. After an initiation you are also in a much better situation to move yourself towards a balanced and healthy life.

How does distant healing work?
Distant healing is when the practitioner sends Reiki energy of a distance to the receiver. It is the practitioners focus and intent to send the energy to another person that makes it work (a very simplified explanation). Some Reiki practitioners schedule the time when the session is to happen. Others will send the energy to be available when the receiver can or wants to receive it (based on intent again). A distant healing session is usually shorter, around 20-30 minutes. Normally Reiki energy is sent to the person as such but it is also possible to send energy to specific problems or even events, past, present and future.

What do I have to do to receive distant healing?
If you are scheduling a session try to aim for a time when you can be undisturbed and can relax. If the practitioner sends the energy for "downloading" when it suits you then just accept to receive the energies when it suits you best.
You don't have to lie down (there is always a risk of falling asleep). Sit comfortably and open your mind to receive the energies sent. It is your intent to receive the energies that will make them effective. You can use a statement like this if it helps you: "I accept any energies sent to me by xxx. I only accept energies that are suitable and safe for me at this moment. I am grateful for any help that I can receive." Use your own words! You can naturally add information if you want to target a specific problem.

What can I expect when receiving distant healing?
Much the same as when you have a hands-on session. You may feel heat, cold or tingling. Emotions may surface, old memories etc. Whatever happens just relax and let the energies flow. The Reiki energies will go where they are most needed. They will try to balance your system and remove any blockages.
A distant healing is normally shorter than a normal session, 20-30 minutes.

Can children receive Reiki?
Yes, anyone can receive Reiki. A session for a child will normally be shorter than for an adult. It is also possible to attune children to Reiki. The first level, Reiki I, can be given even to small children. Older children can be given Reiki II and learn the use of the Reiki symbols.

Can Reiki be used on animals?
Reiki works just as well with animals. Horses, cats, dogs, birds and other animals have been given Reiki with good results. Many pets want to be in the same room if you are giving or receiving Reiki. Reiki energies can be sent to animals or one can actually put the hands on the body of the animal.
You can even use Reiki on flowers, seeds, trees etc. (If one holds seeds in one hand and gives Reiki to the seeds they will grow better when planted.)

I feel better, can I stop using medications?
NO! Reiki should never be seen as a substitute for medical care. Reiki is a complementary therapy that can help your healing process and in many cases improve both your physical and mental health. Many doctors do not believe in alternative therapies and are very skeptical about their patients use of alternatives.
Remember, Reiki cannot hurt you!

Healing: The Reiki Way
The ideas below, common to Western medicine, can cause difficulties for those who want to explore Reiki.
-
One is that healing is a matter of repairing the body.
-
Another is that medical cures give immediate (or at least speedy) results.
-
A third is that the doctor is the healer, and that your only role is to do what he says.
-
Reiki operates within a different set of premises.
-
One is that healing must occur on emotional, mental, and spiritual levels in order to accomplish physical effects.
-
Another is that healing is not necessarily an immediate occurrence but a process of rebalancing on all levels.
-
A third is that you are the healer.

Multilevel Healing
Reiki doesn't focus on physical healing alone (although physical healing often results from treatments). It's based on the belief (shared by other disciplines in the field called vibrational healing) that health on mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical levels is caused by the free flow of energy. When energy is blocked imbalances result.
Stress, for example, is often caused by the mind being burdened by worry. Worry involves thoughts (I have so much to do; how will I ever get it all done) which create an impasse or blockage (I can't), with accompanying feelings (the sensation of fear, panic, etc.) which produce emotional blockages. These can lead to bodily tightening and tension, which can create the conditions for pain and/or illness. Medical, surgical, or pharmaceutical solutions may relieve the physical symptoms, but they or a new set of symptoms will occur if the basic imbalance remains.
Reiki treatments don't focus specifically on relieving symptoms (although, again they are often relieved), but on dissolving the blockages so that energy can flow to rebalance the individual on all levels. The Reiki symbols can be used to accelerate this process.
The power symbol amplifies the energy flow; the mental/emotional balance symbol relieves the pressure on burdened minds; the distant healing symbol, in addition to its many other uses, can send healing energy to past traumas and conflicts (I failed once, I'll fail again; I have to do well because it's always been expected of me) which, in the manner of a low-grade and chronic infection, provide the constant potential for imbalance.

Reiki is Not Pencillin
In saying this we don't want to close out the possibility of immediate results. There have been many instances in which a single Reiki treatment had miraculous results. Imbalances, however, are often a lifetime in development, and though it takes much less than a lifetime to heal them the process isn't a quick fix.
This is one of the reasons why we focus on teaching Reiki. If you are working on dissolving long-term imbalances being able to give yourself daily (or more often) treatments is more cost-effective than going to a practitioner on a daily basis.
We also believe that regular self-treatment can also prevent imbalances and blockages from occurring. If you're going through a stressful period in life regular treatments can help to relax your body, mind, and emotions so that stress, rather than building up, diminishes. In addition, if you have worries about the future, you can use the distant healing symbol to send energy to create those conditions which you desire.

We Are All Healers
Another, related, reason why we focus on teaching Reiki is that we believe that we are the creators of our own health. Any practitioner can tell you that people respond differently to a given treatment. Much of this has to do with someone's willingness to be healed, including the willingness to take responsibility for one's healing and well-being.
To learn Reiki makes a material contribution to this willingness. We are then both affirming that we have the ability and the willingness to heal ourselves, and giving ourselves a simple yet powerful way of doing so.
We come into this world as whole and balanced beings. With Reiki we can restore the wholeness which is our birthright..
